According to the Guinness World Records, Denmark has the highest income tax rate. The top rate of tax is 68% and the basic rate starts at 42%. A very complicated system includes income taxes, (includes work taxes), sales taxes, taxes on ‘luxury items’ and other taxes that businesses must pay as a percentage of their salaries. In return Danes receive many benefits, including free healthcare, free higher education and extensive social services. Denmark is followed by Belgium, Germany, Finland and Sweden.
